Palliative Care Emergencies

Designed for registered professionals, gain the knowledge and skills to identify and respond to palliative care emergencies such as spinal cord compression, superior vena cava obstruction, hypercalcaemia, neutropenic sepsis, and major haemorrhage. Emphasising early recognition, multidisciplinary collaboration, and advance care planning, the course supports sensitive communication and decision-making to enhance patient comfort, safety, and quality of life during critical situations.
This training is designed for registered professionals. Therefore, everyone is welcome to access it, but please be aware that some content may not directly apply to your role.
This training is equivalent to 60 minutes of participatory hours for CPD. A certificate will be provided upon completion of this training.
This training does discuss death and dying, and may be upsetting for some audiences.
This training was developed by the MPFT Palliative and End of Life Care Team (Palliative + EOLC).
Course Objectives:
- To increase awareness and knowledge around palliative care emergencies.
- To explore some clinical situations which require attention.
- To recognise signs, symptoms and RED flags.
- To enhance clinical decision making in emergency situations.
- To have an awareness of guidance for palliative care emergencies.
- Understand the importance of ReSPECT and Advance Care Planning for potential palliative care emergencies.
