Who is the session aimed at?
This session is aimed at all support staff working in community settings supporting someone with a Learning Disability and a diagnosis of epilepsy.
The course will be offered as a half day epilepsy awareness session or a full day (which includes the administration of midazolam training). Please note this session is the half day epilepsy awareness.
The course is delivered in-person and involves a presentation of information using projected slides, as well as practical exercises and group participation and discussion.
For those that require administration of Midazolam training there will also be a competency test, both in the form of a written quiz and a practical assessment.
The course content covers what epilepsy is, classification of seizures, causes and diagnosis, treatments, management of seizures, SUDEP, prolonged seizures, status epilepticus, health and safety and - if a full day session - administration of rescue treatments.
By the end of the sessions the leaner should be able to:
Understand what epilepsy and how it is treated
Understand how to support someone with epilepsy
Understand the different types of seizures and how they present
Understating what SUDEP is
Understand the importance of recording systems, care planning and risk management
For those that require it / the full day session - be competent in administering Midazolam
Know how to refer to the Community Learning Disability Team
Tea/coffee will be provided and each session will have breaks. Certificates will be provided for Epilepsy Awareness to all staff attending and Midazolam Administration Competency Certificates will be provided to those who complete and pass the assessment .
Half day sessions have a limit of 20 people.
