These courses are offered and completed through local colleges within Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. They are held externally to the Social Care Academy.

 

At the point of creating this course, all courses were free, however learners should contact the college to confirm they are eligible to complete the course for free. Some courses may result in a charge if they are not finished in time.

Level 1 - Awareness of Substance Misuse

Learn about harm reduction strategies, support services and the importance of early intervention.

Level 1 - Alcohol Awareness

This course is accessible to all residents of Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. It is available at:

Deepen your understanding of the impact of alcohol consumption on individuals and communities. Explore key concepts such as responsible drinking, alcohol-related harm and strategies for reducing alcohol misuse. Gain insights into the physical, social and mental health effects of alcohol abuse.

Level 2 - Understanding Safeguarding and Prevent

This course is accessible to all residents of Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. It is available at:

The purpose of this qualification is to increase your knowledge and awareness of safeguarding, the Prevent duty, and online safety.

This qualification is aimed at anyone who has a responsibility for safeguarding children, young people or vulnerable adults. It will be particularly useful for people working in a training / educational setting, youth workers, and those involved in the running of youth sports teams and community groups that support children and young people.

The course also provides employers with a structured training programme that will meet the training needs of their employees, giving peace of mind that staff are equipped with the knowledge they need to promote the safety and well-being of children, young people and vulnerable adults.

Level 2 - Dignity and Safeguarding

Explore the concept of dignity and its significance in maintaining the well-being and autonomy of individuals receiving care. Learn about safeguarding protocols and legislation aimed at protecting vulnerable adults from abuse and neglect. Develop practical skills for recognising signs of abuse, responding appropriately to safeguarding concerns, and promoting a culture of dignity and respect in care settings.

Level 2 - Understanding Domestic Abuse

This qualification is designed to increase learners’ awareness and understanding of domestic abuse and its impact. The need for education and training across sectors to enable identification of abuse, allocation of support and referral is a recurring theme within regional domestic abuse strategies.

Awareness of domestic abuse and its impact is important for those working in a wide range of sectors such as healthcare, social care, childcare, education, and housing. There is a need to understand the issues, report on those who may be at risk and support signposting to relevant services. Introducing the new Domestic Abuse Act 2021 and how multi-agency teams must support victims and others, in all manner of service.

Unaccredited - Domestic Abuse

There can be some barriers in trying to support someone who is experiencing domestic abuse, so knowing how individuals can be supported is important, this will also be covered in one of the units.

In this course you will consider that controlling and coercive behaviours are at the foundation of all kinds of domestic violence, where the abuser seeks to gain control of the victim through various kinds of violence and abuse.

As with any kind of abuse, the physical damage that it can cause will vary depending on the circumstances. You will learn the typical physical damage and the emotional distress this can cause the victim.

At the end of this course, you will look at the different local sources of help that an individual can seek out.

Unaccredited - Principles of Safeguarding

Safeguarding is the process of keeping vulnerable adults and children safe to protect them from abuse and neglect and provide effective care. Relevant for most sectors, safeguarding is especially vital for people working in health and social care or early years, childcare and education. 

Unaccredited - Forced Marriage and Honour Based Violence

This course is accessible to all residents of Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. It is available at:

This course is aimed at anyone who wants to expand their knowledge on forced marriage and honour-based violence.  The course will provide you with a general understanding of these types of abuse.  You will also delve into the laws that underpin this crime, how to spot signs of abuse, and strategies workplaces can adopt to support survivors.
