This course is designed to equip care workers with the knowledge and practical strategies needed to support effective communication with individuals who have diverse communication needs and promote their interpersonal skills.
You’ll explore the foundations of expressive and receptive communication, learn how to adapt your language, and gain confidence in using a range of communication aids, from objects of reference and communication boards to social stories and Easy Read materials.
Key topics include:
- Understanding communication and interpersonal skills
- Supporting receptive and expressive language
- Communicating about time and routines
- Using communication aids respectfully and effectively
- Verbal communication and navigating difficult conversations
- Working with interpreters and inclusive communication strategies
This training is suitable for all care support worker staff.
This training is not suitable for mandatory learning. The training is equivalent to 90 minutes participatory hours for CPD. A certificate will be provided upon completion of this training.

Objectives
This training is designed to cover the following key points within the care workforce pathway for people who are new in care, support workers, personal assistants or enhanced care workers:
- Understand how to meet the communication and language needs, wishes and preferences of individuals
- Understand how to promote effective communication with individuals
- Use a range of communication methods, and support the appropriate and safe use of communication aids and technologies
- Understand how to work out the preferred communication method with the person you support, including using appropriate communication aids and technologies
- Be able to communicate effectively with others
- Understand and meet the diverse communication needs, preferences and wishes of individuals
- Deal with confrontation and difficult situations
- Show strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex information in a clear and accessible way
- Be able to support people’s emotional and psychosocial needs and role model effective practice
- Understand and apply approaches to care and support for people at risk of distress
