Course Aim and Description
This engaging and practical course is designed for frontline care staff responsible for administering "as required" (PRN) medication. It explores the importance of PRN protocols within a person-centred care framework, helping staff recognise when PRN medication is appropriate, how to administer it safely, and how to document and review its use effectively.
Key Learning Areas:
- Understanding the purpose and application of PRN protocols
- Recognising symptoms and identifying appropriate PRN interventions
- Accurate administration, dosage, and documentation (including MAR charts and care plans)
- Monitoring side-effects and responding to adverse reactions
- Communicating with the multidisciplinary team and adhering to medication policy
- Managing complex PRN cases and ethical considerations (e.g., STOMP)
- Best practice guidance, including use of checklists and tools like the Abbey Pain Scale
Learners will leave with a clear understanding of their responsibilities and practical tools to ensure safe, effective, and person-centred PRN medication management.

Refreshments will not be provided on the day, however there are shops close by and a cafe on site.
A small basic lunch will be provided on the day.
If you have any additional requirements, such as the need for British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation or mobility requirements, please let us know in advance so that we can make the necessary arrangements to accommodate your needs.
