Explore the relationship between people development, personal growth and performance management, and learn when to apply training, counselling, consulting, mentoring or coaching. Build confidence in active listening, powerful questioning and emotional intelligence, while using practical frameworks like GROW and OSCAR. Finish equipped to run purposeful conversations, give constructive feedback and foster a culture of learning that supports both individual and organisational success.
Through five structured modules, you will:
- Understand the relationship between people development, personal development, and performance management.
- Explore key approaches to development, including training, counselling, consulting, mentoring, and coaching.
- Learn when and how to apply coaching and mentoring effectively in different workplace scenarios.
- Develop core values and skills such as emotional intelligence, active listening, and powerful questioning.
- Apply proven models and frameworks (e.g., GROW, OSCAR, CIGAR) to structure conversations, set goals, give feedback, and resolve conflict.

Objectives
- Explain the purpose of mentoring in adult social care and how it differs from coaching.
- Understand your role and responsibilities in mentoring others within the care setting.
- Develop and maintain an effective mentoring relationship with a mentee.
- Know how to work in partnership with mentees to set clear development targets, review progress, and agree new goals as needed.
- Be able to apply mentoring techniques to support others in delivering high-quality adult social care.
- Explain the purpose of coaching in adult social care and how it differs from mentoring.
- Understand the role of senior care or support workers, team leaders, practice leaders, deputy managers and registered managers in coaching others.
- Be able to develop and maintain an effective coaching relationship with the person being coached.
- Be able to collaborate with Mentees to set goals, monitor progress, and adjust plans to achieve outcomes.
- Use coaching approaches to support others in delivering adult social care and in your own practice specialism.
